Special Educational Needs (SEN)

Special Educational Needs (SEN) refers to the extra support some children need due to learning difficulties, disabilities, or challenges affecting their education. These needs can range from difficulties with reading, writing, communication, behaviour, to physical or sensory impairments. Every child’s needs are unique, and with the right support, they can thrive academically and socially.

You don’t need a formal diagnosis to ask for help. Parents often notice issues before schools do, so if you have concerns, talk to your child’s teacher, Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO), GP, or health visitor. They can help assess your child’s needs and arrange support.

The UK’s legal framework ensures children with SEN receive appropriate education and care. For children with complex needs, Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) coordinate support across education, health, and social care.

Choosing the right school, whether mainstream or special, is important and should fit your child’s individual needs. Support can include extra teaching help, therapies, assistive technology, or classroom adaptations.

Navigating SEN can feel overwhelming, but you’re not alone. This section offers guidance and resources to help you advocate for your child’s education and wellbeing, ensuring they get the support they deserve.
